We’re frequently brought to tears when the powerful connection between human and dogs are showcased. Sometimes when life gets in the way, it’s easy to forget how special our pups really are.
Ten year old Julia was born deaf and is consistently working on her sign-language skills. In January of this year, she found someone to practice with. Her now 7 month old puppy and best friend named Walter.
Like Julia, Walter a terrier-chihuahua mix was born deaf and since coming into each others lives, they have been inseparable. Not only is Walter learning an entirely new way of communicating, but as Julia’s Mom, Chrissy says, “She’s learned a whole other kind of love.”
Special needs dog’s like Walter are often overlooked and passed over. But just like our senior pets, they have a lot of love to give. Special needs dogs aren’t just special needs, but they are indeed “special.” You’ll never see a special needs animal feel sorry for themselves or care that they are different. They enjoy every minute of life and are grateful for it. There is a great deal that humans can learn from them.
Chrissy says, “When I first held Julia, since she couldn’t really hear, she would smell my neck. And when I first held Walter he did almost the same exact thing. I remember just looking at him, and I knew that he was meant to be ours.”
